Importing a car from Germany to North Macedonia: step by step

Customs, homologation, registration: how vehicle import from Germany to North Macedonia works.

Vehicle import Administrator

North Macedonia is not an EU member, so importing from Germany adds export clearance, customs and homologation. With the right order of steps the process stays predictable.

1. Find and check the vehicle

Check history, service record and accident status. If in doubt, have it inspected before buying.

2. Purchase and export documents

Sales contract, registration certificates (parts I and II) and the COC document. An export declaration is prepared for customs.

3. Transport

Open or enclosed transport, or driving the car yourself on export plates.

4. Customs clearance

At the border, customs duty, VAT and possibly excise duty are calculated based on value, engine and the documents provided.

5. Homologation and registration

After the technical inspection the vehicle is registered and you receive papers and plates.

How long does it take?

Usually two to four weeks, depending on location, transport and appointments with the authorities.
